The Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs celebrated on Tuesday the International Workers’ Day, which was held at the Qatar Sports Club in the presence of Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi, Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs of Qatar.
This year’s celebration was marked by awareness-raising activities presented by a number of ministries and institutions including the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, Civil Defense and the Qatari Red Crescent Society. It also included a review of the efforts made by the State to provide guidance in the area of occupational health and safety at the workplace, in addition to honoring a number of distinguished Qatari and non-Qatari employees.
Director of Labour Inspection Department at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs Mohammed Ali Al Meer stressed that the ministry organizes this ceremony in order to highlight the importance of workers in the State of Qatar and in recognition of their efforts in the development and growth of the country.
With regard to the protection of workers’ rights and the development of labour systems, Al Meer noted that an office for cooperation between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs was opened in order to develop procedures and regulations in the Ministry. He pointed out that there are 400 inspectors who conduct periodic inspections of companies and that their role is to provide guidance and detect violations, if any, that expose workers to risk or in the event of violations of their rights, confirming that the proportion of non-compliant companies are continually decreasing.
