Lamborghini moved back into the lead of the International GT Open points standings following a third win in six races for Vincenzo Sospiri Racing’s Frederik Schandorff and Michele Beretta at the Hungaroring.

The pair headed the sister VS Racing Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo of Yuki Nemoto and Baptiste Moulin in Race 1 and bagged third place in Sunday’s second race.

Having arrived in Hungary just one point off the top of the table following wins in Paul Ricard and Spa-Francorchamps, Schandorff and Beretta kicked off the weekend by setting the second-fastest time in qualifying for Race 1. The #63 Huracán maintained position off the rolling start, with Schandorff at the wheel, behind the pole-sitting Mercedes of Loris Spinelli while Nemoto held onto third place around the opening lap.

The order remained the same up until the mandatory driver-change pit-stops, with both Lamborghinis emerging from their stops cleanly. But Spinelli was released into the path of an oncoming GT Cup car, which allowed Beretta to close in and pass for the lead, with Moulin following suite. That gave Beretta and Moulin a clear run to the flag, securing their third one-two of the season as a result.

With a 20-second success handicap to take in Race 2, Beretta and Schandorff knew they had to make the most of their opportunity at the start and the #63 kept its fifth place in the first half of the race before Beretta brought the car in for its pit-stop with half an hour remaining.

Then a torrential downpour hit the circuit with 20 minutes left, with many drivers pitting again to switch to wet weather tyres. Schandorff moved up to second behind the leading Mercedes and finished just over a second behind on the road, but was demoted to third after being under the mimimal handicap time at the pit-stops. Nevertheless, it was enough for Schandorff and Beretta to maintain their championship lead by six points from Soucek and Barker (Porsche – Lechner Racing), heading into the next round of the season at Imola on the weekend of the 24 and 25th July.
